Day Trips and Excursions from Mooresville, Indiana

Anderson, Indiana: Have you experienced the Anderson Speedway yet? If not, you might want to plan a trip to Anderson, a mid-sized city about 50 miles northeast of Mooresville, as the crow flies. The Anderson Speedway has been giving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a run for its money, so to speak, since 1948. You can pass some exciting hours there and also at Anderson’s renowned Hoosier Park, a favorite horse racing venue, complete with professional casino. Though the restaurants in Anderson itself are nice, you can also get a great meal at Hoosier Park. This particular day trip is mainly geared toward the adventure-seeking adults in your family.

Brown County State Park: Starting on the south edge of little Nashville, Indiana, the Brown County State Park sprawls out southward to cover over 15,000 acres of gorgeous and varied parkland, making it, by far, the largest park in Indiana. This is one of the best places to go to enjoy the vivid Fall season anywhere in Indiana, so don’t forget your camera. In fact, you might even want to throw the sleeping bags in the trunk, just in case you decide to stay in one of the parks log cabins or campsites. If you live in Mooresville and haven’t thoroughly explored this giant attraction in Indiana, plan a day trip there soon, or better yet, a real vacation. Brown County State Park is due south of Mooresville, about an hour’s drive down Highway 37.

Wyandotte Caves: This unique excursion is located approximately 150 miles due south of Mooresville, through some beautiful countryside, making it a perfect destination for a day trip. The Wyandotte Caves are operated by the great Marengo Cave in Marengo, Indiana next door, but they are comprised by a separate formation. Both caverns are popular adventures for spelunkers throughout the Midwest, and both offer unforgettable tours for the whole family. The entire area is surrounded by gorgeous forests and parks, including the O’Bannon Woods State Park, which is the closest. Deep underground, you will get a sense of the vast reaches of the earth itself. At the end of the walking tour, guests are challenged to find their own way out, choosing among three paths. There are also many other interesting places to stop on your route to or from the Wyandotte Caves, including the poignant Lincoln Living Historical Farm in nearby Lincoln City, Indiana.
