One of the more popular of Mooresville attractions is its c, located near the Keller Hill Road and State Road 42 intersection. People from all over come to see the phenomenon which, because of an optical illusion produced by the surrounding geography, tricks the eye into thinking a car rolling downhill is actually rolling uphill. Out of the hundreds of gravity hills in the world, Mooresville‘s is one of the best-publicized.
A bit less funky but also popular attractions are the Mooresville festivals. The best known and best attended of these is the Anderson Orchards Apple Festival and Craft Fair, held across three days in late September, “rain or shine.” Harvest your own apples and enjoy some 50 vendors’ booths under the brightly striped tented area.
One of Indiana‘s very first high schools, simply called “The Academy Building,” has been recorded in the National Historic Register. It is located on Mooresville’s Newby Memorial campus. When it was first constructed in 1861, it was used as a boarding school, a Quaker Schoolhouse. Today it houses the Mooresville history museum and some Morgan County community offices. A simple, two-story brick building with windows trimmed in white, it is the very essence of the “little red schoolhouse” from days gone by.
The museum itself is well worth a visit to take in typical artifacts and memorabilia from a small Midwestern town. Called the Academy of Hoosier Heritage, it contains interesting permanent and temporary exhibits and is a central spot for special Mooresville events. Also inside the museum is a gift shop with many unique items and souvenirs.
On the edge of town, visitors can enjoy one of only a handful of real drive-in theaters left in Indiana, the Center Brook Drive-In. For more movie fun, there’s the Mooresville Movies 8 multiplex at 300 S Bridge Crossing.
While Mooresville attractions are plentiful, there are many more world-class Indianapolis attractions just a short drive away. Indianapolis is, in fact, a fount of activities for the lucky suburbanites who dwell around it.
